An Intergenerational Service

Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum

In the spring of 2020 we had a planned “Into the Woods” service that was canceled due to the rising pandemic.  Now, we’re finally able to bring those plans to fruition!  This service will use the music of the musical “Into the Woods” while exploring themes of coming of age, what happens after “happily ever after,” and how we handle moving from interrogating the past and casting blame into the future and building beloved community.

Masks are required in the sanctuary, with the exception of being optional for speakers, soloists, and in the balcony.

Unitarian Universalists in history were radical thinkers in education and in creating the current models of Sunday school.  How do we continue this tradition of being a learning community?  What are our goals in education for all ages?

Brad Dumont, Music Director

For our October 9 service, we welcome members of Boston-based ensemble VOICES 21C for a morning led by Director of Music Brad Dumont and Krystal Morin with ensemble Artistic Director André de Quadros focused on Islamic devotional singing and the experience of participating in the inagurual World Muslim Choral Ensemble in Sri Lanka in July 2022.

Today we are joined by VOICES 21C, an artists’ collective that is devoted to exercising the choral art in pursuit of human rights and justice, dedicated to a mission of global understanding through music. VOICES 21C has had a particular focus on Islamic devotional singing and having conversations to combat Islamophobia in the United States, including annual participation with Vilna Shul in Boston, the Center for Jewish Culture as part of their interfaith concert.Brad’s participation in the World Muslim Choral Ensemble was partially supported by a portion of his professional development funds from FPC.

For part two of our sermon series on belonging, we’ll explore what it means to draw our circle wider still—how do we open up the  circle of “belonging” to include the stranger?

Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum

This year we’re using themes each month where we’ll share a worship service at the beginning of the month on the theme, and then our religious education classes will continue to explore that theme for the month. Our theme for September is “Belonging,” and we’re kicking off our theme months with a two-part sermon series. This first service will explore “belonging” in a smaller way—what does it mean to “belong” to a family, a church, an organization, a community? Why do we value belonging?
