ART SERVICE: The Myth of Talent and a ‘Pop-up’ Art Show

Brad Dumont and Artists of FPC

9:00 in the sanctuary and 11:00 in the sanctuary and online

10:05am-10:55am: ‘Pop-up’ art show in Fellowship Hall

Service: “Talent”—a loaded word which limits our exploration of creativity around the assumption that some were born with ‘gifts’ and others were not. Or possibly a word that some have found comfort in as a way to lift up and share a unique skill set they possess. Whether the label of ‘talent’ has carried a certain connotation for you, we have all experienced moments where we have doubted our creative selves. Come hear from artists at FPC as they talk about self-doubt in the face of creative challenges and consider ‘The Myth of Talent.’

‘Pop-up’ Art Show: Between services please join us in the Fellowship Hall where we will put out all of the folding tables for folks to display a few pieces of their art. This is meant to be casual, quick, fun, and informal! All levels and types of art are welcome to be displayed as long as you can setup quickly and leave space for others. We’d love to see everyone (youth too!) contribute a piece of art to the gallery! Please bring a card or page that has your name and a description of your work to go alongside it, unless you want to be anonymous!

Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum & Michelle Cote, Director of Religious Education

After two long years we are finally able to gather for an intergenerational service!! This service will feature a story told by both children and adults.  It interweaves the story with music, acting and opportunities for all to participate. The theme is how we as a congregation make each other strong by how we support each other. What a wonderful message to share as we gather in community with all our members from young to old.

The story was adapted by the Rev. Erika Hewitt from the story “Hare’s Gifts” by Rev. Ken Collier. For this service, we are asking members to please bring a canned good or dried food to donate to a local organization.

Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum

Anne Frank wrote, “In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.” How do we renew our faith in the goodness of people in such times as these? This service will explore some answers.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS CLOCKS ONE HOUR AHEAD

Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum

Join us for this special service full of circus fun, but also full of complexity.  Circus pioneer P.T. Barnum was a complicated figure… and a Universalist.  What do we do with this Universalist forefather who some say lifted up people out of poverty, yet others see as someone who exploited his performers?

Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum

The UUA General Assembly recently passed an Action of Immediate Witness that included the goal of police abolition. What are the possibilities and limitations of this idea? How can we reimagine the future of justice and community life? Recommended reading – Rev. Cindy will be drawing from the UUA’s Common Read book for 2021-2022, Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment by Zach Norris, and we may be having events later in the year to discuss the book.

Lisa Fagerstrom, Lay Leader

Within the past month or so, there has been talk in the news of moving from pandemic to endemic when describing COVID-19. This service will explore this changing perspective and how life itself is "endemic"--something that is always with us to experience and move through, with an invitation to embrace its "lifey-ness" in our daily living.

Writer Max Ehrmann once stated, “You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”  To celebrate the birthday of Galileo Galilei (February 15 1564) we’ll look at the ways the universe is still unfolding and we’re always learning more.
