“There are three possible ways of identifying with a religious community: by behaving, by believing, or by belonging…” wrote Rabbi Neil Gillman, summarizing Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism. As I’ll be talking about in our “UU Journey” classes this month, Unitarian Universalists are defined not by creed, but by covenant. But while covenant defines our faith, belonging may be what defines us as individual UUs. What does it meant to be a people defined by belonging?
